Fledge Show

"In May 2021 the Gallery held ‘Fledge: A Year of Birds’, an exhibition contributed to by 5 artists: Clare Bigger, Mary Griffiths, Ann Lewis, Sue Platt and Liam Spencer. The exhibition ran from the 1st to the 23rd of May and presented work in a variety of mediums including watercolours, oils and steel which provided something for everyone. The success of the exhibition meant Contemporary Six could donate 10% of every sale to the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity which was a proud moment where we could give back to the community.

In the exhibition, each of the artists responded to the birds in their close environments and Britain’s developing urban environments. The artists’ welcomed the escapism from the pandemic that their work gifted them; most notably, Liam Spencer said that like the rest of the world he spent much more time inside and enjoyed ‘the glorious spring weather’ from his window, whilst ‘watching nature do its thing’. Given the amount of free time available, the artists channelled their energy into making the most of slowing down and being more observant, which really showed in the quality of work produced.

I have worked in town for 12 years and am acutely aware of the homelessness crisis which has worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the Gallery is really pleased to contribute to the charity’s efforts to tackle homelessness and improve the quality of life for those on the streets. The Gallery along with the artists raised a total of £2,549 for the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity and would like to thank everyone who purchased paintings, sculptures and drawings from the collection, we really appreciate your support."
