Ethical Code of Conduct.
Partnerships, Fundraising and Grant-Making
This document establishes what principles are applied, as set out by the ethics policy for the charity, in relation to our partnerships, fundraising and grant-making.
Partnerships and Fundraising
Our mission and values help establish which collaborations and partnerships are appropriate. Partnerships may include any of the following (though this is not an exhaustive list): delivery of events, fundraising campaigns, sponsorships, networking opportunities, speaker opportunities, grant awards including matched funding, and donations. The trustees (and their delegates) must act in the best interests of the charity when deciding whether to accept or refuse a particular donation, offer of support or potential partnership.
Such donations, offers of support and partnerships must be clearly evaluated to establish whether it would be in the best interests of the Charity to accept or refuse them.
In general, we apply the following principles to all (potential) partnerships, campaigns and fundraising activities, donations and offers of support:
Partnership with Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity does not imply partnership with the Mayor, or endorsement by the Mayor
Partnership with Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity does not imply approval or endorsement of any corporate or commercial policies, nor does it imply that the Charity will advocate on behalf of the partner in question
Participation in or exposure to campaigns for Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity will not cause undue harm to individuals, communities or businesses, with careful consideration of the principles of ‘do no harm’ and integrity
Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity name should not be used in a way that implies endorsement of the partner organisations or its policies
Donations or offers of support should contribute to furthering the charitable objectives
If a donation or offer of support is framed by reference to a specific purpose, it must be a charitable purpose that falls within our charitable objectives
The donor/partner’s objectives, values, and activities should be compatible with Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity’s mission, values and objectives
Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity may reject a partnership proposal, offer of support or donation on one or more of the following grounds:
Where the partner organisation in question has a reputation for discriminatory practice, or poor approach to equality and diversity
Where the partner organisation in question has a reputation for transphobic, misogynistic, racist, homophobic or other predjudical statements
Where the partnership may be detrimental to the mission, vision and values of Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity
Where the partnership would lead to a decline in support for Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity from its stakeholders and beneficiaries, and could be shown to result in a fall of resource, fundraising capacity and influence
Where the partner organisation operates within one of the following areas of consideration: gambling, arms manufacturing, alcohol or tobacco.
Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity will reject a partnership proposal, offer of support or donation on one or more of the following grounds:
The partnership, donation or offer of support is known, or suspected to be or derives from criminal sources and/or illegal activity
The partnership, donation or offer of support derives from a source conflicting with the mission, vision and values Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity
The donor or partner’s activities appear to be incompatible with the mission, vision and values Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity
Acceptance of the donation or offer of support would be a contravention of the Bribery Act 2010
Acceptance of the partnership, donation or offer of support would compromise the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity’s independent status
Acceptance of the partnership, donation or offer of support would depend on the fulfilment of conditions which are unacceptable to Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity
Where the donation, offer of support or partnership derives from organisations or individuals who are associated with the provision of housing in poor condition, or with unethical or unlawful housing practices.
These principles and areas of consideration also apply to (potential) ambassadors, event hosts and speakers, and campaign promoters.
Grant-Making
All grant making decisions are framed in the context of maximising our ability to meet our charitable objectives and the concept of beneficiaries first. Grants will not be awarded to any organisation who does not meet the standards we expect of our partner and donor organisations (outlined above), or who fall below the standards and requirements expected of them in existing legislation and charity governance.
