Our new schools campaign is in a class of itself! Interested?

Greater Manchester Mayor's Charity are launching a brand new schools campaign and we need your help.

Home. What does that mean to you? This is what we plan to ask school students across Greater Manchester. We want to get children and of course their families thinking about the experience of homelessness, raising awareness and funding for the vital work we support at Greater Manchester Mayor’s Charity. Headteachers, teachers and governing bodies are being invited to register their interest for our exciting new, annual campaign ‘Greater Manchester, Show Me Home’.

The start of this two-part campaign will begin with an own clothes day with a difference. In the last weeks of the summer term, we are asking participating schools to host a ‘wear your pyjamas to school day’, with each child donating £1 for the enviable privilege. The feelings of warmth, comfort and safety pyjamas provide have strong parallels with how many view home. We would like to harness those feelings to encourage discussion on what home means to each and every child in the school.

Participating schools will then be asked to hold a session where their students each create a piece of art on what home means to them. They will be asked to imagine and try to capture home in any artistic form they deem fit, so long as it fits on a piece of paper!

Schools can submit some of the best pieces into a Greater Manchester-wide competition with the winning entries exhibited in a central Manchester art gallery, Contemporary Six. For all winning submissions, each child, their families and teachers will be invited to a special preview session in October before the gallery opens to the general public.

We must stop the stigmatisation of people who are experiencing homelessness. By facilitating discussions like these and talking with our children and young people, we can begin to break down misconceptions and illuminate key work in the city region to support people who need it.

If you would like to find out more, please register your interest to participate in this campaign here. We will be in touch! You can find out a bit more about the campaign and how to be involved in the file below. Please share widely with parents, teachers, governors and PTA members in your networks!
